Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall – Fri. Nov 8 – Mon. Nov 11 – The City of Sanford and Seminole County Government host the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall at Fort Mellon Park in downtown Sanford, 600 E 1st St, 32771. It will be open for viewing 24 hours a day. An Opening Ceremony is planned for Fri. Nov. 8 at 11am and a Closing Ceremony will be part of the Veterans Day Ceremony on Mon. Fairways for Warriors Veterans Day Golf Tournament – Fri. Nov 8 – 9th Annual event at Eagle Creek GC in Orlando. Fairways for Warriors organization is dedicated to saving and improving the quality of the lives of combat wounded veterans by using golf, golf instruction and camaraderie to help heal the visible and invisible wounds of war for service personnel and their families. Golf has proven to be an excellent tool for mental and physical rehabilitation, and Fairways for Warriors is giving these brave men and women hope and healing from their most significant injuries – the injuries we can’t see such as depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Info: Chris at 407-456-0200, cbaeten@ knightfederal .com

 

Veterans Memorial Re-Dedication Ceremony – Fri. Nov 8 – Hosted by the City of Mount Dora, join the Mayor and members of American Legion Post 35 for the official re-dedication of the Veterans Memorial Statue. 10am at the corner of 5th Avenue and Baker Street, in front of City Hall. The Memorial stood long in disrepair until Public Works Crews took the initiative to clean, polish and pressure wash the memorial, revealing a stunning tribute to all of our veterans from many wars. Mount Dora Pipes and Drums will be there paying tribute to all branches of the military. All are welcome!

 

City of Winter Park’s 9th Annual Veterans Day Celebration – Fri. Nov 8 – “Honoring Winter Park Heroes” program begins at 10am at the Winter Park Community Center Ruby Ball Amphitheater located at 721 W. New England Ave., Winter Park. At 9:30am, the public is invited to visit with organizations that offer resources specifically for veteran needs as the VFW Post 2093 Community Band entertains guests. At 10am, the program will begin with musical tributes, anecdotal speakers including guest speaker Steven Alch, and recognition of veterans according to the various military branches served. All veterans that have served in any military campaign or branch in honor of our nation’s freedom are invited to attend. Info: 407-599-3428

Lake Highland Preparatory School’s Veteran’s Day Tribute – Fri Nov 8 – Students and faculty presents its annual tribute of music, dancing, drama and video footage to honor veterans. Veterans Walk 2019 at Lake Eola – Fri. Nov 8 – All are invited from 11am – 2pm to walk 5 laps/ 5.5 miles around Lake Eola in Support our Veterans. Beginning near the swan boat rentals. Veterans will be carrying the American Flag as well as the flags of the different Branches in Honor of our Veterans service to our Country. Veterans will also be carrying a weighted pack to symbolize the burden that our service members carry on a daily basis. Civilians are welcome to carry the pack of a veteran if they would like. Family members and pets are welcome. Donations of $5 or more will be presented to the Marine Corps League (Corporal Larry E. Reconciling Veterans Retreat – Sat. Nov 9 – A day retreat of fellowship, communion and spiritual guidance. Veterans Day Parade in Osceola County – Sat. Meet WW2 Combat airmen – 4 of the Grand Marshalls of the Orlando Veterans Day Parade will be available to greet at 10am across from the entrance to the Catholic Church on Robinson ( Intersection of Orange and Robinson ). They range in age from 96 to 99 – living History treasures! All they did was to help save the world!

 

City of Orlando’s Veterans Day Parade – Sat. Nov 9 – This 20th Annual event hosted by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council, one of the largest Veteran’s Day Parades in the southeast U.S. The Parade includes 100 units consisting of local veterans’ organizations, members of the active military, bands, floats, JROTC units, first responders, community groups and military vehicles, and more all coming together to pay tribute to those who have fought for our freedoms. Cape Canaveral Half Marathon/10k – Sun Nov 10 – Run/walk past America’s space monuments — past, present and future. The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation Half Marathon salutes the United States Armed Forces and their role in our space program. There will be special awards given to the Top 5 Finishers for each branch of the Armed Forces, and the first 600 members of the military (active duty, reserve, retired and veterans) to register will receive a significant discount to the regular race entry fee! Non-U.S. citizens can now enter this event and run behind the secured gates of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station with special registration. Patriot Cruise and Salute in Mount Dora – Sun Nov 10 – The City of Mount Dora is host to the 8th Annual Mount Dora Patriot Cruise and Salute, 11:30am – 2pm at Grantham Park, 357-499 S Tremain St, Mount Dora, 32757. Veterans will arrive at 12noon via boats, across Lake Dora, where they will dock at Grantham Park. Residents, visitors, and anyone who wants to support our veterans are encouraged to come to the docks by 11:45am, bring an American Flag, and wave it proudly as the veterans are ‘cruised’ in by volunteer boat captains following Sea Tow and the Lake County Sheriff’s boat. Flags are available to those who need one. The vets will be treated to a picnic munch and others are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch, their lawn chairs and enjoy the program. Over 30 veterans, serving from WWII to Afghanistan, will be honored. Free Veterans Day Luncheon – The 1st United Methodist Church of Oviedo hosts its annual free Veterans Day Luncheon. The event is in the church gymnasium at 12:30pm. As part of the patriotic program, the guest speaker will be retired Rear Admiral Bret Muilenberg, former commander of the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command and the Navy’s Chief Civil Engineer. The luncheon will be catered by Mission Barbecue and is open to all local military veterans and active duty service members, their families and friends. American Legion Flag Placing – Mon. Nov 11 – The public is welcome to join American Legion Post 331 – the Dorie Miller Memorial Post – in placing flags on veterans’ graves at the Eatonville Memorial cemetery, 10am. 2121 Brook Dr, Maitland, 32751 (just off Wymore Rd.) Florida National Cemetery (Bushnell) – Mon. Nov 11 – Annual Veterans Day Ceremony – “For our Freedom, Happiness & Lives – A Grateful Nation” at 11am, Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell at the Flag Assembly Area. Keynote speaker is Chaplain Linda J. Pugsley, Lt Col, USAF; Steve Jerve of WFLA TV News Channel 8 (Tampa) will be the Master of Ceremonies. Patriotic music prior to, and during the ceremony. Patriotic songs will be performed by Adaliss Ramirez. Dave Czohara and Joe Capellini will play Taps. There will be a rifle salute by Sumter County Correctional Institute Honor Guard and a presentation of colors by the Arena Wranglers of the Blue Moon Ranch from Wildwood, and flags from various military organizations. Guests are invited to arrive early and enjoy the patriotic and inspirational musical prelude which will begin shortly before the ceremony. City of Ocoee’s Veterans Day Ceremony – Mon. Nov. 11 – 11am at Ocoee Lakeshore Center, 125 North Lakeshore Drive, Ocoee, 34761. Keynote speaker is Dr. Barbara Gannon. She is the coordinator for the UCF’s Community Veterans History project, an oral history program. She is the author of “The Won Cause: Black and White Comradeship in the Grand Army of the Republic” (UNC Press, 2011), an examination of the black and white members of the Union Army’s largest veterans’ organization. This book received the Wiley-Silver Prize (University of Mississippi) for the best first book on the Civil War, was recognized with an honorable mention by the Lincoln Prize Committee 2012 (Gilder Lehrman Institute), and was a finalist for the Jefferson Davis Prize (Museum of the Confederacy). Music from the Ocoee Middle School band and flag presentations by the Ocoee Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. Info: 407-905-3100.

Marine Corps League Orlando – Tues. Nov 12 – Cpl. Larry E. Smedley, Detachment 064 Monthly Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month, 7pm – 8pm at the American Legion Florida Department bldg., 1912A Lee Road, Orlando, FL 32810. (Cpl. Larry Smedley was an Orange County resident and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was killed in Vietnam on December 21, 1967 after heroic actions were seen in battle. He earned the Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously; he was 18 yrs old.)
